Reclaiming a word with a negative connotation, such as "sundown," and transforming it into a symbol of celebration and empowerment for people of color, is a powerful act of linguistic and cultural reclamation our founding leader intended when creating the SunDown@6 Series. Historically, "sundown towns" were areas that enforced racial segregation through discriminatory laws and practices, often violently excluding people of color after dark. By reappropriating "sundown" to signify a celebration, the narrative shifts from one of exclusion and oppression to one of inclusion, joy, and resilience. This new meaning can symbolize the autonomy and agency that people of color have to celebrate their identities and cultures at all times of the day, transcending historical barriers. Such acts of reclamation not only challenge and dismantle past injustices but also foster community, pride, and solidarity, allowing people to reshape language to reflect their own experiences and aspirations.
